"Wizardry 8" (Sir-tech, 2001-02) is the last and best game in the legendary RPG saga that made its debut in 1981 with "Proving Grounds of the Mad Overlord". The story is anything but original: There's a legendary lost artifact that grants its owner the power to rule the universe, a super villain determined to find it (the Dark Savant from "Wizardry 7" is back with a vengeance!) and a small group of heroes with the mission to stop him. OK, we've already seen it hundreds, maybe thousands of times in similar games. However, this doesn't mean that the story isn't interesting, quite the contrary, the game has a truly epic "feel" and atmosphere that captures your attention right from the beginning and holds your interest until the very end of this long (100+ hours) adventure. The world of "Wizardry 8" is a pleasure to explore thanks to the beautiful and detailed 3D graphics and level design is absolutely brilliant! The smart turn-based combat system is easy to learn and never gets old or boring and the deep character creation and development system allows you to create highly original and interesting characters. All these make for an extremely addictive game! Trust me on this, once you start playing "Wizardry 8", you'll have a hard time to turn your computer off and go to bed! However, Wizardry 8 is not for every RPG fan out there and let me explain myself: The game is combat-heavy, with the emphasis on exploration of dungeons and character development through combat. Of course, there are occasional puzzles to solve and NPCs to interact with but the core of this game is exploring dungeons, fighting enemies and leveling up your characters. Gamers accustomed to RPGs like the "Gothic" and "Fallout" series or "Dragon Age Origins", and generally RPGs that have a strong adventure element might find "Wizardry 8" too "old-school" for their taste. Two small notes before I conclude this short review: First, "Wizardry 8" works fine on Windows 7 (and laptops) but due to its copy-protection system, the first time you run it, the game may take up to 5 minutes to load!!! You may think (like me!) that the CD is damaged but don't worry, after a while the game will (eventually...) start. This happens even if you install the patch 1.2.4. Second, if you're going to buy the game, go for the version that includes a full printed manual (some versions come with a PDF manual). It's well-written and you'll find some important information on spells and characters that will prove useful as you play. Some ebay-sellers don't mention if the printed manual is included, so ask them before you bid. In conclusion, "Wizardry 8" is a terrific RPG. Yes, it may be too "traditional", too "old-school" for some people but it's still one of the best computer RPGs ever made.Vollständige Rezension lesen
