The Power of the Stones

The Power of the Stones is the tale of two children, a boy and a girl, aged 11 and 12, who escape the slavery of working in the cotton mills of England to end up involved in the slave trade of Africa. Two ancient lapis lazuli stones provide the children with the strength to overcome two difficult situations, and enable them to believe in themselves. The girl, Jenny, escapes being tried as a witch, and ends up a stowaway on a ship headed for the West coast of Africa to pick up a cargo of slaves. Jack, meanwhile, is transported by the power of his stone, to the floor of a jungle in the Ivory Coast. He opens his eyes to an incredible new world, a stark contrast to the cotton mills in 18th Century London. An incredible coincidence, (or the power of the stones) brings the two children together again in the midst of a busy port on the west coast of Africa, where, together with their new found friends; the ship's cook, an African boy and a pick-pocketing monkey they devise a wild plan to free the captive Africans and make a stand against the cruel trade of slavery.
