Almoravid (engl.)

The Almoravids were a Berber dynasty that ruled over a vast empire in the western part of the Islamic world from the 11th to the 12th century. They originated from the region of the Atlas Mountains in modern-day Morocco. The Almoravids emerged as a religious movement in the 11th century, led by a charismatic leader named Ibn Yasin. They aimed to purify and reform Islam, and their movement quickly gained popularity among the Berber tribes in North Africa. In 1054, the Almoravids established their first capital city, Marrakesh, which became a major center of power and culture. From there, they launched military campaigns to expand their empire. They also built impressive architectural structures, such as the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakesh, which became an iconic symbol of their dynasty. The Almoravids' rule in Al-Andalus came to an end with the rise of another Islamic dynasty, the Almohads, in the 12th century. The Almoravids faced internal conflicts and were weakened by their extensive territorial expansion. They were eventually defeated by the Almohads in 1147, marking the end of their dynasty. The Almoravids left a lasting impact on the regions they ruled. They played a significant role in shaping the cultural and architectural heritage of North Africa and Spain.
