Jacques de Sores, nicknamed the exterminator angel, took over and, in 1555, seized la Havane, that the Spanish believed to be un-takeable, and ravaged it, not without organizing a pantomime to insult the pope. Henceforth, the French pirates would be perceived as Lutheran by the Spanish and pursued by the inquisition. This was the general opinion. Almost all the French sailors are Protestants, wrote the historian Jean Le Frère, in 1589.
