BATTLESHIP RICHELIEU 1/400 Scale Kit
With construction starting in Arsenal de Brest in 1939, the RICHELIEU, like its twin brother the JEAN BART is one of the heaviest, most powerful and best armed unit constructed by The Navy at the dawn of the Second World War. These two battleships are improvements on their elders, the battle cruisers DUNKERQUE and STRASBOURG, but heavier, faster, more heavily armed and above
all, better protected. 95% complete in 1939, the RICHELIEU was still undergoing tests at the time of the German invasion in 1940. It left Brest on 18th June, just before the arrival of the Germans, and supported French West Africa. In Dakar it suffered several English
attacks. In 1943 it left for the United States. Following a major refit at the end of 1943, the battleship sailed to support Scapa Flow, joining the British Home Fleet that was watching the final great German ships in Norway. In 1944, it was sent to support the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean. The ship arrived on 10th April 1944 in Ceylon, integrating the British fleet commanded by Admiral Somerville. Returning to the Mediterranean for a refit, it entered Toulon on 1st October 1944 after 52 months far from its homeland. Upon returning to Ceylon in March 1945 with largely renewed machinery, the Richelieu joined the East Indies Fleet. It was present at the Japanese surrender in Singapore on 12th September 1945. It took part in the first Indochina operations from October 1945. Placed in reserve in June 1956, it served as an accommodation ship in Brest. Disarmed in 1967, she was taken apart in La Spezia (Italy) in 1968.
