A snakeskin rock features singular patterning, which is composed of pebbles of jasper and quartz minerals. These were carried downstream through a river and deposited on a delta or sandbar; over time, the pebbles cement together, thanks to deposits of silica minerals such as agate and chalcedony. Sedimentary rocks formed in this way are called conglomerates, which can be found all over the world in diverse combinations. This rock has been tumbled and polished to give it a smooth, shiny surface that accentuates the patterning such that the rock appears to look like something approximating snakeskin. It makes a great addition to classrooms, and constitutes an excellent example of how geological specimen are sometimes formed through a variety of forces, as in this example of a jasper/quartz conglomerate hybrid.
